Truth and Light

                                                 Truth and Light

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (John 8:12) "For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came  through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17) A Christian should live a life based on Christ's teaching, and John gives us the foundation for living a Christian life. Unfortunately, many Christians take the easy way out and don't bother to receive the light because they don't try to learn the truth. Excuses vary from "not interested in the subject" to "don't have the time." Few seem to understand that almost everything in life must be addressed, or you will
eventually pay the consequences.

Every day I read or hear outlandish statements or declarations from individuals that can't possibly be true. Our courts, for the most part, no longer require truth from people, especially if the speaker is prominent in politics, an agency or organization, or even a church or religious group. Free speech is recognized in some situations, but oppressed in others. There is no level in these decisions. Most citizens I talk to, including regular members of congregations, do not know the facts of controversial subjects. They are surprised when I mention something specific about a
subject they know nothing about. Frequently all they know about a subject is information only containing an opinion with absolutely
no solid background support.

When they repeat this false information they are breaking at least the Ninth Commandment, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." You may not be talking about your neighbor, which is the most troublesome type of false witness--gossip. But any false information you pass on or enhance to others is bearing false witness. This may not seem so bad, but a noise can start an avalanche, and a trickle can cause great damage. Wars are fought, and people are killed because of false witness. The terrible consequences of such false witnesses (lies) can be understood if you experienced or read about World War II and Hitler's terror. While most false witness does not reach that level of wickedness, there is always some collateral damage.

The most common type of this sin is character assassination. This goes on continually, especially in politics. Candidates don't have to prove any statements or claims. Party faithfuls of all parties are guilty of this. Many Christians seem to like this sin, chortling about the discomfort it may cause. Climbers in organizations use this to discredit supervisors or authorities in an effort to get a high level position. This can also be a type of bullying, especially among children. People learn at a very early age how to separate others to satisfy their lust for power and greed. We are all born with the seed of sin within us. We have until the age of accountability to bring this sinful tendency under control. After the age of 13-14, we no longer \have a pass for sin until we accept Christ's offer of salvation.

When we knowingly accept and pass on false information, we  have no excuse and can't expect Christ's shed blood to cover our transgression. If we confessed Christ as our leader and heavenly representative, we must put sin such as false witness away. Making a mistake by accident can be forgiven. Making a mistake because we are too lazy to find the truth also places our salvation in the very same category. There is no excuse for a Christian not to learn the truth about a subject. You must find the time and pursue an attempt to find the truth. The truth is Jesus Christ, and the truth is the light of the world. The opposite of truth is false, and the opposite of light is darkness. There is no middle ground.

We are all busy. Many Christians are so busy (?) they don't have time to study scripture. Many pastors are so busy they don't have time to prepare a teaching sermon. Many Christians are satisfied with a pastor who gives a 15 or 20 minute sermon exhorting them to be a "good person." We should already know that. This kind of teaching enables us to assume a self righteous pose of satisfaction. Place some filthy lucre in the offering plate and polish your halo when you get home.

Or, you can study the previous week's message and come up with some questions. Of course, you will undoubtedly need to read  background scripture for that sermon to realize you know very little about the subject. Perhaps the pastor doesn't want questioning about the subject. Pastors, too, sometimes are busy and don't want extra work. They assuredly don't want crank questions. Perhaps a solid question will encourage a sermon on the subject in the near future. Such a question can make a pastor aware that a subject of interest can be explored to expose more scripture truth.

Christian friend, don't fool yourself into thinking you can just follow
any one--including a pastor--and you will qualify as one of Christ's saved
followers with eternal life. If you do not seek the truth, you will not live
in the light. It is your personal responsibility to find the truth. You are
responsible for you. Chapter 5 of the Book of Hebrews cautions and
teaches us about spiritual immaturity. Not continuing a serious study
of scripture renders you incapable of discerning spirits. Thus, you may
unknowingly follow someone who is spiritually "on the other side."

Hebrews 5:12-14 warns us, "For though by this time you ought to be
teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of
righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

You must put in TIME to study issues rather than accepting the word of someone else, no matter who he or she  may be. They answer for  themselves, and you answer for you. There is no such thing as a quick
fix except in drugs. You know how that works out. Don't be a religious
druggie. For some mental exercise, do you know why the Apostle Paul
instructed women to wear hair cover (hats), why Jude mentioned the
body of Moses? Both are very interesting subjects. As we are told in
John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth. and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me." You must find the truth to realize the light.

STALWART SOLDIER

                                           STALWART SOLDIER

Some of the most stalwart soldiers in history didn't make their mark in the military. In fact, most have never been recognized, at  least not by those in their professional field. There are many  religious leaders who have lent their names to religious  denominations. Sadly, much of Christ's teaching and meaning have been lost to denominational rituals or customs. The real stalwart  soldiers who best represented Christ are generally known only in a  localized area or region. Let's recognize one such man, a pastor  for the ages.

This is someone I've known for 65 years, since high school. We took somewhat similar paths after high school, both matriculating at Susquehanna. From then on, our paths differed, although they were much alike. Allen Acor of the Bloomsburg-Millville area was known across a broad area of the Central Susquehanna region. Allen was always active in the community and at school. He always had a little something extra to give. He became a school teacher and pastor. More, than that, he became a friend on a low key basis to hurting people.

He was the one people turned to when they were glad or sad,  officiating at many marriages and funerals. He was not a stickler for denominational rites, and preached from the heart. He did not follow divisive denominational policies. He taught the solid Word of God as presented in scripture. He did not believe in throwing people who erred under the bus. He emulated Christ in having a forgiving nature. He was generous to a fault, and believed in giving a person a second chance. He was, as we used to say in slang language, a prince of a man.

Allen and I didn't meet regularly, but we kept track of each other and our ministries. When we did have an opportunity to spend some time together, it was a joyous reunion. We had different styles of presenting the Word, but we both presented the unadulterated Word of God. We could discuss anything, and never seemed to be on different pages. Like Faith Walk Ministry, Allen was always available. He never really retired, and kept doing God's work right to the very end.

Allen and I shared blessed and lifetime marriages. He carried his gentle nature to the role of husband and father. He raised a large family, something he missed growing up. It may not be apparent to many people, but his actions and directions in school and the church carry on through those he met and enriched. Because of his dual role as a school teacher and pastor, he touched people of all ages and across many denominational lines. We were always brothers in Christ, and I value the time we corresponded and spent together. We will meet again, and this time we'll never be separated.

SATAN'S CHURCH

                                              SATAN'S CHURCH

The fastest growing church in America belongs to Satan, but many
Christians don't recognize it. Satan is a really sharp cookie, who has
developed his challenge to God with great sophistication. He started
out with great credentials in beauty and light with the name Lucifer.
He is a great leader, and persuaded one third of the angels to revolt
against God. Satan has the most effective public relations department
ever known. Consider the world's population approaching 8 billion
people, and only about 2 billion Christians. The insidious part of this
is Satan's ability to "plant" his accomplished "moles" or spies within
Christian organizations. Coupled with the lack of knowledge and the
inexperience of most Christians, his forces continue to outpace our
Christian growth.

Satan's Church does not use a sign or symbol, but works as a sort
of silent partner in Christian churches and organizations. The church
that identifies itself as satanic or by a similar designation is evil, but
isn't the real problem. Many Christians don't take the existence of
Satan's influence over principalities and rulers seriously. Eph. 5:12
warns us, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
Since good versus evil is a spiritual battle to begin, we don't realize
the physical battle follows a spiritual battle. Satan has his troops
organized similar to God's order of angels and heavenly workers.
God has a commander in chief of His army, and Satan copies the
organization God utilizes. We may not realize or recognize that Satan
has a prince (ruler) over every nation, and his influence is carried all
the way to local government. He leaves no stone unturned in his
continuing effort to supplant God as supreme being.

What! You didn't think Satan had an agent in local government?
His desire is to replace God as supreme being. He is working tirelessly
to try and achieve his goal. You can see what power he has when he
is tempting Jesus on an exceeding high mountain. Matt. 4:8,9 tells us,
"Again, the devil took Him up on an exceeding high mountain, and
showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said
to Him, 'All these things I will give You if You will fall down and
worship me.'" Satan has his "man" in charge everywhere. You should
also note the temptation of Jesus clearly shows us that Satan is
indeed a spiritual person. He also has supernatural powers as we see
all the way back to Ex. 7:8-12, where the Pharaoh's wise men were
able to turn rods into serpents. Don't think Satan doesn't try to
influence local governments all the way to town or township levels.

If you wanted to disrupt Christ's people from carrying out their
mission, where would the most fertile ground be? Satan doesn't worry
about the unsaved because they don't need any help to stray from the
road to eternal life. He concentrates on people who may hear and
listen to the Word of God as well as groups of people who have become
members of churches. Christians have, from the days the Apostle Paul
began planting churches, created methods to separate believers.
Scripture warns about division in Matt. 12:25, Mark 3:24,25, and Luke
11:17. Quoting Mark, "If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom
cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot
stand." Ignoring three warnings by Christ signifies "three strikes and
you're out."

During my recovery, I had the opportunity to speak with Christians of
many denominations. Some would not discuss Christianity unless the
topic was related exclusively to a particular denomination. I have
found that many pastors are friendly in gatherings of many religious
leaders, but cold as ice when it's only one or two conversing. Their
little part of the church world is their private domain. It seems every
denomination considers itself the best. Some say certain other
denominations aren't Christian enough, and many conservatives
say a liberal can't even be a Christian. Christ's teaching in the four
gospels is being trampled in bigotry. Satan is using people in church
leadership to destroy the Christian kingdom. These leaders, including
pastors, are following people with personal agendas who are fogging
up Christ's very words by substituting emotional issues for the actual
teaching in the gospels. What these apostate church leaders and
false Christians are proposing is a slap in the face to Christ who taught
that every person in the world has a choice. Forced Christianity
eliminates choice and makes it impossible to accept Christ's offer
with a commitment from the heart.

Why don't pastors challenge church leaders or public speakers when
they contradict the teaching of Christ? Can't they read and understand
scripture? In the Old Testament, Israel always went through a cycle
that ended with some singular punishment--usually captivity. The reason
was usually the same. The priests and leaders fell away from God's word
and replaced worship of God. They had carnal interests, just as we see
overtaking Christians today. Christ taught us to love our neighbors, but
our record shows bigotry and hatred against other races, other religions,
gender, political opponents, and even education. Satan is using two main
principles very well. They are the principles driving him to supplant God
in the wake of destroying the world. The two principles are ego and
pride.

Ego and pride are built on control, and this problem is exacerbated by
the measuring stick of money. Everything is measured by a dollar value,
and the churches that are resisting this are to be commended. It's a
different matter for most politicians, who are basically interested in the
power of money. Christians--some of whom are actually really not saved--
go astray when they hear the damnation charges against small elements
of the population. Satan's people do an excellent job of leading people
with little or no knowledge of scripture into discrimination and separation
of our people. Don't pastors know enough scripture to quote the reason
not to discriminate or try to control everyone? Read Matt. 12:31-32. These
two verses from the mouth of Christ command us not to harass or force
anyone to prison or death. Where did Christ say to force anyone to do
anything or to kill another person?

All sins are equally bad except one, and that is crystal clear in
Matt. 12:31-32. "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will
be forgiven men, but  the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be
forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it
will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will
not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come." This is the
only unforgivable sin. When you speak against the Holy Spirit, you are
denying the supreme power of God. Anyone who condemns gays, same
sex marriage or different life style is violating the teaching of Christ
unless the person denies the existence and power of God. You don't have
to agree with the person, but he/she is still one of God's children. You
should understand that men, both christian and unsaved, continue to
oppress women, just as Israel did in both the Old and New Testament.
This is a world wide phenomenon, as we dictate one rule for women who
sin, while we  tolerate the same sin in men.

Adultery penalizes women, while men simply smile and reflect they
are "da man." Nothing new here. Christ pointed out the sin of adultery
in John 8:7 was forgivable as other common sins. The Jews practiced
sexual harassment, following Moses's direction to stone a woman who
committed adultery while excusing men. When the Pharisees asked
Christ to judge the woman and condemn her to stoning, he said "He
who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." Of
course none were without sin, so they slunk quietly away. Jesus was
telling them not to pass judgment. This, too, is in the gospel teaching
of Christ in Matt. 7:1-5, where He instructs us not to judge. Christians
tend to be hypocrites, even between denominations. All these bible
quotes I have given are in the four gospels. These are Christ's playbook.
What have you been doing in church if you don't follow His directions?
Satan's agents in congregations are hard at work.

Why doesn't the church community question the ridiculous claims
and statements by politicians? Don't they know a person on welfare
can't possibly go on a cruise? It costs thousands of dollars to go on
a cruise. And why do they limit the welfare person to $25 a day at an
ATM? Even a person on social security receives roughly $1,000 a
month (of their own savings). From this, they have to pay rent,
insurance and other normal costs of living. There is never enough to
save. The conservatives want to ban welfare people from movies and
other cheap recreational activities. Also on the can't do list is the
purchase of lobster and steak. These officials actually have no idea of
what they're talking about. There is a small number of welfare people
who cheat, but none get enough money or food stamps to create any
dollar problem. This is class discrimination, and victims include elderly,
veterans, children and disabled.

Since these public officials or wannabes never have to reserach
and defend their outrageous claims, average Americans don't bother
to check out scripture or the facts. These charlatans don't seem to
have any embarrassment for their utterly ridiculous statements. They
continue to pass legislation that is NOT scriptural and that creates
hardship and suffering. Christ taught how we should treat all people,
not just Christians. We are being led to hatred and greed. Many
churches are doing the right thing, except there are no brakes
being applied to the false teaching about poverty, education and
fair pay. Racial and religious discrimination is practiced by so many
people--both Christian and non Christian--that our nation is being torn
apart. The social and educational improvements that followed the
Great Depression are being eliminated. There was a radio program
and Sunday newspaper supplement that explained "no one knows
what evil lurks in the hearts and minds of men. But, the Shadow
knows." If we see evil in the making, it is our responsibility to speak
up. God sees all, and we will be accountable if we commit the sin of
omission. This is much like being unwilling to witness for Christ. That
is the real test of our Christian commitment.

WISE GUY

                                                                   WISE GUY

INTRODUCTION: This message may step on the toes of some readers because there are scriptural definitions of some practices certain denominations do not follow. These guidelines are full quotes, with no opinion or interpretation. None of us is wise enough to add to or change these scriptural words. They are the inspired writing directed by the Holy Ghost. They are not open to any Christian's attempt to explain anything not included in the quote. Either we believe the whole bible, or we are rewriting the bible. Humor aids healing, and I believe Christians can use some humor in learning and questioning on what authority is given for "expanded" interpretation.
                                                          Tea and Crumpets

A group of Saints were sitting around a table in Heaven outside a mansion. (John 14:2) "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." These Saints are resurrected Christians who are taking a "tea and crumpets" break. God treats His workers with compassion, and they find Heaven is indeed Paradise. (Luke 23:43) "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." Resurrected Saints are not subject to man's scientific principles, and enjoy the properties of the spirit world. They don't have to eat or drink, but they can if they choose. (Luke 24:42, 43) "So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence." Don't try to change any of scripture with denominational rules like tea or wine is a stimulant and forbidden, or you can't eat meat. It's in the bible, friends, and either you believe it all, or you are only a part-Christian, which is a lost person. Carefully read 1 Tim 4:1-5. "For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." (Verses 4 and 5) Now, concerning the beverages, go to John 2:1-10.  Jesus turned water into wine.
He didn't tell anybody to get drunk. Anyone teaching the word of God who refuses to accept these verses of scripture does not have the Holy Spirit and is not qualified to be a Christian teacher. If you missed these scripture verses previously, you probably missed much more.  Now, on to that discussion by Saints.

One of them, Ty, a native of Massachusetts, said he didn't think  Solomon was the wisest man. His decision about cutting the baby in half to satisfy the two women's contention was based on knowing a mother's love and compassion would invoke a sacrifice to spare the baby's life. See 1 Kings 3:16-27. It was a wise decision, but not as wise as the decision by Abraham to hear and obey the Lord. Abraham was the one who listened to and obeyed God's directions. He is the one who received the Abrahamic Covenant (Gen. 15:17-21), and founded our faith. Beau, a Saint from New Orleans, said he disagreed with both choices, and nominated David. "David was a man so principled that he didn't kill King Saul because Saul had been anointed king by the Lord," contended Beau.

"How about Daniel?" suggested Hugh. "God communicated with him and gave him dream interpretations. Daniel and his three friends were protected from certain death, and altered world belief to place the God of Abraham as the supreme God of all. Daniel did so much you have to read the entire Book of Daniel to include everything (Dan. 12 chapters). He gave us the seventy weeks' vision leading to the Book of Revelation." "All of you are ignoring the decisions and actions of women," interjected
Ann, who exhibited some impatience at spiritual chauvinism. "Esther had gone before the king, not knowing if she would be condemned to death for her appearance." (Esther 4:16, last part), "And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish." Ann added, "What about Zipporah, Moses's wife, who saved his life when the Lord was about to kill him?" Ex. 4:24, "And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the Lord met him and sought to kill him."

"I know there are other women and men worthy of consideration," Xavier said apologetically. "There are so many, and I look at their entire life to weigh wisdom. Solomon drifted far from God in his later years, and 1 Kings 11: 1-11 tells us he had hundreds of foreign women and thousands of horses. God warned him about this, but, as usual, wealth seems to bring blindness to men. I would favor Moses over Solomon because the baby incident was a sort of spectacular media type event."

Joseph spoke up and said he thought his namesake Joseph should be considered. "He rose from slavery to be second in command in Egypt, and was responsible for saving not only his people, but Egypt and others  through his walk with God. Gen. 37 and chapters 39 through 45 tell a great story about a dedicated man of God."

“I don't see how we can omit the Disciple Paul from consideration," spoke up Deborah. "He suffered greatly, was beaten, imprisoned, run out of town and rejected by his own people. Perhaps you would say he was obedient rather than wise, but being obedient is being wise as well," she explained. "I don't know if I could even consider Solomon wise at all, because of some of the bloody things he did to cement his grip on the kingdom. After all, he slaughtered opponents, and they were his own  people. These may have been wise decisions, but they certainly weren't based on Christian teaching," she concluded.

Henry broke into the discussion to defend Solomon. "Christ and His teaching were not yet on earth when Solomon lived," Henry pointed out. "Israel and the world operated differently then," he continued. "When you look back at history, you see a continuing process of how leadership directed people. The Lord several times either killed or had people killed. That was true after our Savior was resurrected, if you  recall Acts, chapter 5. God struck dead Ananias and Sapphira when they held back part of the proceeds from a sale of their possessions. (Verses 1 thru 10) According to scripture, the Lord didn't become angry with Solomon until after the king had disobeyed his instructions not to get involved with foreign women with other gods, and owned such a large number of horses." 1 Kings 10:26 and 28 tells about the horses, and 1 Kings 11:1-3 tells us Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. They
were of many nationalities and religions."

Ty laughed, and summarized the horses and women scriptures by saying, "You'd think a man with 1,000 women was not so wise and didn't display much common sense. The horses were bad enough, but I can't imagine 'owning' 1,000 women, no matter how exotic they were. It's a wonder he lived as long as he did." Hugh agreed, adding that Solomon also did some other unwise things such as using forced labor (1 Kings 9:20-21). "It  always seemed to be that prosperity was followed by extensive sin," Hugh sadly concluded. "Yes, Israel kept repeating its own history over and over
as generations changed," Ty said somberly. "Well, it's still going on in the church today," piped Throckmorton, who usually was the quiet one. "And, announced the 'quiet one', "I have the real wisest man who ever lived, excepting Christ, of course."

"Well, now, my man, who would that be?" asked Willie, as everyone paused in eating and drinking. It was unusual enough for him to say much of anything at these gatherings, yet alone come out with such a major contribution. Throckmorton lost no time proclaiming his choice,  proudly telling his friends the wisest man just happened to remind him of  a distant relative. "You've heard about Elijah in the book of 2 Kings?"  Throckmorton asked. "Of course," responded Xavier, "Go on with your   choice." I always think of that old song about the wooden Indian outside  the cigar store," Throckmorton explained. "So, you're nominating Elijah  because of the song calling him an Indian?" Xavier appeared astounded.  "Elijah wasn't even an Indian, Native American variety or otherwise,"  objected Woo Hoo, the oriental member of the group. "No, but he LOOKED  like an American Indian, which I am, Throckmorton  explained. "But the song about Elijah reminds me of Elisha, Elijah's prophetic understudy," Throckmorton continued.

"I feel left out," Woo Hoo complained, "Because i can't recall a single Oriental Christian wise man, although Confucius was a man of virtue. Tell us why you think Elisha was the wisest man."

"Okay," Throckmorton eagerly agreed, directing his friends to 2 Kings. "This is one of the most amazing books of the bible," he began, "Not just because of Elisha's wise decision, but the great history of the event that included God's taking Elijah to heaven in a flaming chariot of fire with horses of fire in a whirlwind. That's a really big deal. God sent horses of fire and a flaming chariot to take Elijah to Heaven.
(2 Kings 2:11)  "What about Elisha? Woo Hoo impatiently asked. "Elijah was a great prophet, but the chariot scene was sort of a pyrotechnic media type thing," he
described.

"Yes, that was an eye catcher, and as such takes away the marvelous decision by Elisha. They knew Elijah would be taken away soon, and Elijah asked Elisha what he could do for his faithful understudy. 2 Kings 2:9 tells the wisest decision of all in the form of Elisha's request. He asked Elijah, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."' (This is the last part of that verse.) "You see Elisha asked not for himself, but for a super strong strength of the Holy Spirit. With that spiritual power, Elisha
could do more of God's work. He asked for nothing for himself. He would have more ability to help others or to do anything under God's direction."

"Throckmorton, you don't say much, but when you do speak, you say a real mouthful," said Hugh, admiringly. "I've read over that part of the bible many times, and always sort of blurred through that request because of the chariot of fire and Elijah being taken up alive." Ty chimed in, "You know, I didn't pay enough attention, either. I recall that the believers and followers of the two prophets wanted to search the area because they didn't believe Elijah wouldn't fall out or be cast out of the chariot on the  way. Elisha told them not to look, and, of course, they found nothing.
(2 Kings 2:15-18) We shouldn't forget that Moses wasn't the only one who separated a body of water to cross. Elisha also did it after Elijah departed. (2 Kings 2:13-14)

"You're showing us up," teased Xavier. "Now I remember that Elisha went to work immediately and performed miracles. (2 Kings 2:19-22) "And then 42 youths saw Elisha along the road and mocked him, calling him a 'bald head.' Apparently he was not handsome, and he could have  asked to be a better looking man, but he didn't," Ann said." When the  youths mocked him, Elisha cursed them and two female bears came out of the woods and mauled them. You men see that we females always
supported you guys in the carnal world," jested Ann.

For the second time--a record--Throckmorton spoke up again. "My people knew the value of a good woman. We followed our tribal genealogy by the female side," he pointed out. Woo Hoo came right back at him, with "Yeah you allowed them to erect the tepees, make and wash the clothes, cook, bear and raise the children, and other fun things. Meanwhile the braves went hunting, fishing and making war." They all had a hearty laugh, and cheerfully went back to the Lord's work.
